The SEC has published its fiscal 2027 exam priorities. The list stays in the release.
A filings roll can docket a priorities release by its date and its URL. It should not invent the priorities when it has not quoted them.
The US filings item that is already public, going into the week of 26 October 2026, is not Wednesday’s Federal Reserve statement. It is the Securities and Exchange Commission’s announcement, dated 23 October on its press wire, of examination priorities for fiscal year 2027. The release is the list of what exams will emphasise. This roll records that the announcement exists, who published it, and when. It does not replace the release with a summary, because a summary of priorities that has not been checked line by line becomes a second, unofficial list.
The URL on the wire is the docket entry: the 23 October press release titled as fiscal-year 2027 examination priorities. A registrant reads that page. A secondary note that says “the SEC will focus on X” without quoting the page is how exam alerts drift.
The two releases beside it#
The same October wire, in the items immediately older, carries two cross-border supervisory notes, both dated 20 October. One is a supervisory memorandum of understanding with France’s AMF, described in the headline as cooperation on investment advisers and investment service providers. The other is an autumn financial regulatory dialogue with Japan’s Financial Services Agency. Headlines are not the memoranda. They are enough to show that the Commission’s October paper trail is not only domestic exams. The text of each agreement, where the Commission has published it, outranks the headline.
None of these three items is a registration approval for a named firm, and none is Wednesday’s rate decision. They sit on the same week as that decision only on a calendar.
The market week registrants will also be watching#
- 23 October ..... SEC announces FY2027 examination priorities
- 20 October ..... SEC–AMF supervisory MOU; SEC–FSA dialogue
- Wednesday ...... Fed meeting, about 2bp of a hike priced, per MUFG
- The priorities release is not the FOMC statement.
MUFG’s 26 October snapshot puts the Fed on Wednesday with the Bank of Canada and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the ECB on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday. It expects holds from the Fed, the ECB and the Bank of Japan, and 25-basis-point hikes from the other two. About 2 basis points of a Fed hike are in Wednesday’s price on that snapshot, and about 21 are in December’s. CNBC the same morning had the 10-year yield at 4.974%.
A US registrant can have both documents open: the exam-priorities release, which says where supervisors intend to look, and the rates tape, which says what the week’s funding market is doing. They answer different questions. The priorities do not move the 10-year. The 10-year does not edit the priorities.
This roll’s Monday entry is therefore a docket line, not a rewrite of the SEC’s list. When a quoted extract from the release is in hand, the line can grow a second sentence. It does not grow one today.
What the docket line should contain is dull and sufficient: publisher, date, document title, URL, and a status of “priorities announced, list not extracted here”. The 20 October AMF memorandum and the FSA dialogue get the same treatment. A filings book that instead writes “exams will target custody, AI and private funds” because those topics were fashionable in some other year has manufactured a priority. Fashion is not a citation. The Federal Reserve press feed, checked alongside this, shows the latest monetary documents are from earlier in October, including minutes of the September meeting released on 7 October. Those minutes are not Wednesday’s statement either. Three generations of document are easy to tangle: a priorities release, a set of minutes, and a decision that is still ahead. The roll keeps them on three lines.
This is not legal advice and not a prediction of any examination outcome.
Frequently asked questions
What will SEC exams focus on in fiscal 2027?
The answer is the 23 October release itself. This note does not reprint or paraphrase the priority list.
Does the priorities release change a firm’s registration?
A priorities document tells registrants where exams are likely to look. It is not, by itself, a new registration or a new statute. The text of the release is the place to read the scope.
What else is on the US public calendar?
MUFG puts the Fed on Wednesday with Canada and New Zealand, the ECB on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday. Examination priorities and the policy statement are different documents.
